You’d think a 4-mile move from Highland to Bossier City would be quick. It isn’t. There’s a river in the middle of it, and exactly four ways across that river, and three of those four ways have their own personality based on the time of day, the shift change at Horseshoe Casino, and whether or not LADOTD is doing deck work on the I-220 span. This is the routing brief we hand every dispatcher.
The four bridges (and what they actually are)
The Red River cuts Shreveport-Bossier in half. Four crossings carry traffic between Caddo Parish on the west bank and Bossier Parish on the east. Each one has a different shape and a different rush-hour pattern.
I-220 / Jimmie Davis Bridge
The north loop crossing. Six-lane interstate span carrying the Jimmie Davis Bridge across the river just north of downtown. Fastest most of the day; painful when LADOTD has a lane closed.
I-20 / Downtown Bridge
The central interstate crossing. Carries the I-20 corridor through downtown Shreveport east into Bossier. Heaviest freight traffic; tightest weave with the I-49/I-220 interchanges on the west bank.
Louisiana Street Bridge
The downtown brick crossing — the historic one with the lighted arch. Two lanes each way, surface street. Fine off-peak; brutal during casino shift change and Boardwalk events.
Shreveport-Barksdale Hwy
The south crossing via the Barksdale Boulevard bridge. Routes you toward Barksdale AFB and East Bossier. Best for jobs south of I-20 on either bank.
Why bridge selection matters on move day
A 26-foot moving truck is not a sedan. It doesn’t accept lane changes well, doesn’t do tight cloverleaf turns easily, and gets passed badly by 18-wheelers on the I-20 weaves. Pick the wrong bridge at the wrong hour and you eat 30-90 minutes just on the crossing — minutes you’re paying for if you’re on an hourly clock.

The hour-by-hour routing brief

The casino-shift factor
Bossier City’s waterfront casinos — Horseshoe, Eldorado, Margaritaville — run three shifts a day. Shift changes hit at 6am, 2pm, and 10pm. The 2pm change is the one that wrecks move days: dealers, security, food-service workers, and management all cross the river within a 30-minute window, and most of them use Louisiana Street or I-20.
If your move involves a Bossier address and the load completes between 1:30 and 2:30pm, we route via I-220 north regardless of which bridge is technically shorter. The 4-mile detour saves the 25-minute shift-change wait every time.
The Barksdale AFB commute
Barksdale Air Force Base sits in southeast Bossier with two main gates — the West Gate off Barksdale Boulevard and the South Gate off East Louisiana Street. Active-duty inbound traffic peaks 6:30-7:30am. Outbound peaks 4:00-5:30pm. Both windows hammer the Shreveport-Barksdale Highway crossing and the I-20 downtown deck.
For PCS moves (we do plenty of those), we coordinate with the inbound family on the gate-arrival window and route the truck so it arrives after the gate rush, not during it. Phil Sanderson, our Bossier crew chief, has run this routine since 2019.
Real-time bridge work alerts
LADOTD does maintenance on the I-220 and I-20 spans most years. The Louisiana Street bridge gets periodic brick and railing work. Here’s how we stay current:
- LADOTD 511 system — we pull the morning report at 5:30am every move day.
- Shreveport-Bossier Convention Bureau event calendar — Independence Bowl, Mudbug Madness, and Red River Revel all close bridges or lanes.
- Casino events — concerts at Horseshoe and Margaritaville drive surge bridge use we plan around.
- Barksdale public-affairs notices — airshow weeks and security-exercise days shift gate-traffic patterns.
The five worst bridge scenarios we’ve dispatched around
- Friday 4pm in August. Dorm cycle peak + Barksdale outbound + casino shift + weekend Boardwalk crowd. Use I-220 or wait until 7pm.
- Saturday morning during Mudbug Madness. Festival closes Louisiana Street. Route I-220 only.
- Independence Bowl weekend. I-20 downtown deck slows for the stadium traffic. Time loads before noon.
- Ice-storm Monday in January. Louisiana Street bridge closes first. I-220 and I-20 follow. We don’t schedule loads — we reschedule.
- LADOTD deck-replacement weekend on I-220. All traffic forced to I-20 and Louisiana Street. Move on Tuesday-Thursday during those windows.
Booking around the bridge
Here’s the practical math we share with every Caddo-to-Bossier or Bossier-to-Caddo customer:
- Schedule for Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday if you can choose — weekday off-peak windows are the cleanest.
- Load by 8am on the Caddo side — cross by 9, unload starts at 10.
- Avoid the 4:00-6:30pm window for cross-river truck movement — the I-220 detour is the only sane option.
- Save the south-Bossier moves for mid-morning, when the Shreveport-Barksdale Hwy bridge is its quietest.
- Tell the dispatcher if you have a freight elevator slot or a property-management window — we route the bridge to land us there on the dot.
What this looks like in a real quote

The bridges by destination
- Highland to Bossier City Boardwalk-area: I-220 nine times out of ten.
- Downtown Shreveport to East Bossier: Louisiana Street off-peak; I-20 during peak.
- South Highlands to Haughton or Benton: I-20 east; stay on I-20 if you continue east.
- Broadmoor to Barksdale Boulevard: Shreveport-Barksdale Hwy direct.
- Greenwood or Keithville to Bossier Parish CC: I-20 east; expect bridge tolls of time, not money.
