If your kid is starting at LSU-Shreveport, Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Centenary College, Bossier Parish CC, or Grambling State this August, you’ve already noticed the dorm-move calendar isn’t kind. Every campus picks the same week. Every parent flies in the same weekend. Every truck-rental in Caddo Parish is gone by the 25th of July. This is the guide we wish we could hand every family at the airport.
Why August 1 breaks everything
The North Louisiana college cycle compresses every dorm move-in into roughly July 28 through August 5. Five campuses move thousands of students through three parishes with one Red River bridge corridor and two interstates. Every elevator in every dorm has a queue. Every off-campus property manager has back-to-back lease signings. Nothing about that week is normal.
We built the entire A-Class calendar around this. Ben spent seven years at Atlas Van Lines watching August-1 chaos hammer families that had picked the wrong week, the wrong truck, or the wrong move-in slot. The whole point of opening A-Class in 2018 was to run a serious operation around just this cycle.
Ben’s take: “Every August at Atlas I’d watch the same scene — family in a rental Suburban, kid sleep-deprived, freshman dorm room three flights up, no elevator slot booked, mom in tears by 2pm. The fix isn’t a bigger truck. The fix is a calendar that respects the cycle.”
LSU-Shreveport: on-campus and off-campus
LSU-Shreveport (LSUS) sits on East Kings Highway in the Highland neighborhood. The on-campus residence options are tight — mostly suite-style with shared kitchens and limited elevator access. The off-campus picture is bigger: apartments along Youree Drive, Line Avenue corridor, and the Pierremont Road belt south of campus.
LSUS on-campus protocol
- Move-in window: typically the Saturday before classes — one elevator, two-hour assigned slots.
- Loading dock: rear of the main residence complex; we book the dock for our truck through the LSUS housing office.
- What works: arriving 30 minutes before your slot, parents-stay-in-the-car-while-we-load.
- What kills you: trying to roll a personal pickup up to the front entrance during peak slots.
LSUS off-campus reality
Most LSUS upperclassmen live off-campus within a 3-mile radius. The complexes along Pierremont and Line Avenue handle move-in volume well; the older houses converted to student rentals in Highland and South Highlands handle it less well. We send Doug McGregor — our Centenary-area estimator who knows the off-campus housing stock cold — to walk these places before quote.
Louisiana Tech in Ruston: the 70-mile commute
Louisiana Tech is the trickiest. Ruston is 70 miles east of Shreveport on I-20, which means your move-in is technically a long-distance day even though it’s the same parish system. Tech’s dorm move-in week is usually the second-to-last week of August — one week behind the LSU-Shreveport / Centenary crush, which is a small mercy.
For Tech moves we route through Phil Sanderson, our Bossier-side crew chief who runs the I-20 long-hauls. The math: leave Shreveport at 5am, deliver at Ruston by 7am, unload by 11am, back in Shreveport for a second job by 2pm. We charge a route-band figure starting at $1,295 for a dorm-sized load, not the long-distance start rate.
Centenary College: the dorm cycle plus the off-campus churn
Centenary is small, beautiful, and brutally hard to move into. The campus sits in Highland at the corner of Kings Highway and Centenary Boulevard. The residence halls are mostly older brick with narrow stairs, no elevators in the freshman dorms, and 1920s-era doorways that don’t love a modern queen-mattress.
Centenary dorm move-in checklist
- Pre-measure the stairwell turn — we’ve seen $1,400 chests not fit and have to be carried bare.
- Skip the queen, bring a twin XL — Centenary supplies the mattress; the bed frame is the only piece you need.
- Use vacuum bags for clothing — saves three boxes per closet.
- Book the dorm-move special — $295 flat, 4-hour minimum, includes the elevator-queue buffer for the buildings that have one.
Centenary off-campus — the bigger story
Centenary juniors and seniors flood the Highland and South Highlands rental markets. Many of those off-campus leases turn over mid-month — the 15th of August, the 15th of December, the 15th of May — which is the entire reason our second pillar exists. Bossier Parish CC: the commuter campus
Bossier Parish Community College on East Louisiana Street is mostly commuter, but the few residential options are scattered across Bossier City — garden-apartment complexes and rented houses behind the Louisiana Boardwalk. Move-in is less dramatic than LSUS or Centenary; the bridge logistics are the wildcard.
If you’re moving a BPCC student from Shreveport to Bossier, your truck crosses the Red River on either I-20, I-220, or Louisiana Street. Pick wrong and you eat 40 minutes in casino-shift traffic. Beth in dispatch routes around this every August.
Greek-row dorm protocols
Sorority and fraternity houses at Louisiana Tech and Centenary have their own rules — some written, mostly tribal. The houses don’t have loading docks. The chapter advisors expect movers to be invisible. Pledge-class move-in days double the foot traffic. Here’s what works:
- Park the truck on the side street, not in front of the house.
- Use the back stairs when they exist; ask the house mother before the first trip.
- Bring the small-bay truck (we use a 16-footer for these); a 26-footer can’t physically turn into most Greek-row driveways.
- Schedule for Sunday afternoon — Greek move-in is normally Friday-Saturday; the Sunday slot is wide open.
The parents-fly-in scenario
This is the request that lights up our phone in late July. Parents are flying into Shreveport Regional from out of state. The kid’s stuff is in a U-Pack pod in our Greenwood Road bay, or stored back home, or being shipped from Amazon. The family lands Friday afternoon, the dorm opens Saturday, classes start Monday.
What we do for these families: store the inbound shipment at our climate-controlled bay, schedule the dorm delivery for the assigned move-in slot, do the elevator queue ourselves so the family can do the campus tour. The whole sequence is one flat figure quoted in advance — no hourly stress while you’re jet-lagged.
Ben’s take: “A mom flew in from Phoenix last August — daughter starting at Centenary, never been to Shreveport. We met her at the storage bay, drove the load to the dorm, did the carry-up, and had her back at the hotel before sunset. That’s what we built the calendar around.”
Grambling State: 60 miles east
Grambling sits east of Ruston, 60 miles from our yard. Move-in week mirrors Louisiana Tech’s. We treat Grambling jobs the same way as Tech — Phil runs the crew, we route I-20 east, and we’re back in Shreveport by mid-afternoon.
